Description
1958 Eddie Mathews Game Worn Jersey. Take Major League Baseball's most attractive uniform style, add Hall of Fame ownership, then tie it to a National League Championship season, and what do you get? If you answered "This lot," then you have done so correctly. The presented gorgeous grey flannel from a second consecutive pennant season in Milwaukee was sported on the road by the Hall of Famer and 500 Home Run Club member as the Braves outpaced the second place Pirates by eight regular season games, and very possibly in the Yankee Stadium contests of that year's Fall Classic.If you've noticed that the jersey's digits are ten higher than Mathews' standard "41," you're correct, though the outline of the number "4" beneath the replacement "5" is discernible upon front and back, an alteration almost certainly made at the minor league level. The "Mathews" embroidered swatch in the collar remains as further proof of original ownership. The classic "Braves" and tomahawk logo complete the chest design, and the screaming Indian patch remains affixed at left sleeve. Proper "Wilson [size] 44" label is present at left front lower tail, just above the "1958" embroidered year swatch. Zipper front remains fully functional.
Wear is very strong, though admittedly a portion of this likely dates from its farm club days as well. A small degree of rust staining at the left ribs causes no noteworthy concern. We'll leave it to the winning bidder to decide if he would like to return this important gamer to its original "41" status, which should be a fairly easy task for a talented seamstress. It's a treasure either way, the first 1950's Mathews gamer to reach a major house's auction block in at least a decade. LOA from Lou Lampson.
