Description
1957 Warren Spahn Game Worn Milwaukee Braves Jersey. Like the incredible Eddie Mathews gamer that precedes this lot, the presented jersey comes to us from a former resident of Cedar Rapids, Iowa who acquired it from a clubhouse worker for the minor league Braves affiliate after the team was done with the Big Leaguers' hand-me-downs. Clearly a kid with no shortage of baseball savvy, our consignor sought out the biggest stars of the Milwaukee team, grabbing two future Hall of Famers from the laundry bin. Here we offer what is arguably the most important Spahn jersey ever to surface in the collecting hobby, worn by baseball's winningest southpaw during the greatest season of his career, punctuated by both a World Championship ring and the illustrious Cy Young Award. The gorgeous aesthetics which made the Braves the most fashionable franchise of the 1950's are in full effect here, with red and black felt "Braves 21" adorning the chest on either side of felt and chenille tomahawk iconography. Number "21" is repeated on verso. The screaming Indian patch on the left sleeve has been lost to the passing decades, but its stitching pattern is clearly evident, making proper application of a replacement an easy task. The embroidered "Spahn" swatch at interior collar remains firmly affixed, while the "1957" year swatch in the tail hangs on by a few original stitches beneath the "Wilson [size] 42" and washing instructions labels.
The enormous historical relevance of the shirt cannot be diminished by a scattering of condition issues, namely the broken front zipper and a degree of staining, a mixture of dark soiling and the bleeding of the red dye from the felt identifiers released from dampness encountered through improper storage. Our catalog imagery should properly indicate that the aesthetics remain very strong, and the beauty of this Cooperstown-quality relic is far more than skin deep. Another monumental hobby find making its auction debut at Heritage. LOA from Heritage Auctions.
