Description

1956 Jim "Junior" Gilliam Game Worn Brooklyn Dodgers Jersey, SGC Superior. His introduction to the Majors found him walking in the footsteps of a legend, taking over second base duties from Jackie Robinson, whose diminishing athleticism made the brave barrier-buster a better fit at third. Gilliam rose to that challenge, earning 1953 Rookie of the Year honors, although his greatest statistical season came three years later as he donned the offered road grey flannel. He'd bat a career-best .300 to earn his first All-Star appearance and a fifth place finish in National League MVP balloting.

This would also be the last season that the Brooklyn Dodgers would play in the World Series, so there are strong odds this garment saw action at Yankee Stadium, perhaps during Don Larsen's immortal Game Five perfecto. The experts at SGC characterize game use as "moderate to heavy," suggestive of a full season of wear. The jersey survives in 100% original and unaltered condition with no condition faults worthy of note beyond a small patched hole at lower front tail, earning that service's highest grade.

"Dodgers" spans the chest in blue felt script, with number "19" applied to verso. Interior collar holds "MacGregor size 42" label with an embroidered "Gilliam" felt swatch just below. Lower interior button path reveals "Set 1 1956" flap tag. LOA from SGC, Superior. LOA from Heritage Auctions.
