1955 Johnny Podres Game Worn Brooklyn Dodgers Jersey - Photo Matched to Sports Illustrated Cover!
Despite being a four-time All-Star, four-time World Series Champion, ERA leader and posting a lifetime 2.11 ERA in six World Series games, Johnny Podres will always be best remembered for his Game Seven shutout masterpiece against the vaunted New York Yankees in 1955 which allowed Brooklyn's perennial princes to finally ascend the throne. For his efforts, he was named the 1955 World Series MVP and Sports Illustrated's "Sportsman of the Year."

The historic garment on offer here was worn by Podres during Brooklyn's mythic 1955 campaign and subsequently, after the season's conclusion, for the Sports Illustrated 'Sportsman of the Year' photo shoot on November 19, 1955 during which time the image for the January 2, 1956 cover was shot. This jersey has been conclusively matched to that November 19th photo shoot. (Getty Images #487560234).

While the tail portion of this road gray flannel jersey has been cut right at the fifth button position, the scripted "Dodgers" across the chest and identifying "45" on the verso, both in soft blue felt, are still intact and in wonderful condition. Brooklyn's distinctive blue piping around the sleeve openings, neckline, and down the front is also present and flourishing.

A black, rectangular "MacGregor" size "42" tag appears in the collar. Directly below sits a cream colored felt swatch sewn through the garment with "Podres" chain-link stitched in reddish pink thread. Furthermore, the distinctive MacGregor letter and number fonts are consistent with what the Dodgers were wearing during that season when they sported both MacGregor and Spalding manufactured uniforms.

If the winning bidder so chooses, he/she may wish to source a common MacGregor Dodgers road jersey from 1955-57 and restore the tail portion of the Podres, which would greatly enhance the display appeal and resale potential of the piece without compromising its inherent value. A tremendous artifact from the most iconic season of one of baseball's most storied franchises, the jersey was once part of the permanent display at the Brooklyn Dodgers Museum.
