1952 Carl Erskine Game Worn Brooklyn Dodgers Jersey. Tough gamer was originally owned and worn by one of the true pitching mainstays of the 1950's Dodgers, a man who dedicated all twelve years of his playing career (1948-59) to the franchise in a rotation that included legends like Sandy Koufax and Don Drysdale. Though the embroidering in the tail of this home white Brooklyn Dodgers jersey indicates "Carl Erskine 1951-2," our experts believe the shirt was made in anticipation of the 1951 World Series--a plan derailed by Bobby Thomson's historic Shot Heard 'round the World--and then carried over for use during the 1952 regular season. The absence of any sign of the stitching pattern of the National League 75th Anniversary patch on the left sleeve would appear to back this claim, as would the faint pattern of the original number "17" on the chest, which would not have been applied for the 1951 season.

Now, as our catalog photography clearly indicates, the jersey has been renumbered for minor league use, with a red "59" on the chest and matching blue digits on verso. The blue felt "Dodgers" script across the chest is, of course, 100% original to the jersey, and it would be a simple task to restore the digits to Erskine's if desired. The interior collar holds the proper "AG Spalding & Bros [size] 42" tagging. The jersey was acquired from the farm club player who wore this jersey and the Roy Campanella pants likewise presented within this auction. Also included with this jersey is a pair of "Rawlings" pants, determined to have no Major League heritage and included here solely for display purposes. LOA from Heritage Auctions.
