Description
1952 Bob Lemon Game Worn Cleveland Indians Jersey. He was the top workhorse of the American League in 1952, setting season records for starts (36), complete games (28) and, accordingly, innings pitched (309.2). With twenty-two victories, Lemon doubled his loss total for 1952, earning his fourth of five top-ten finishes in MVP balloting, a campaign of dominance that was essential in keeping the pennant race tight (though the Yankees would hold off the hard-charging Indians by a two-game margin). The home white flannel gamer comes to us from a former showgirl, a dancer in a troupe called the Tanzarettes. The performers were booked to entertain the Indians at a Cleveland nightclub in 1953, doing a special baseball-themed number for the unique audience. Each lady was issued a jersey to wear for the routine, and our consignor was the lucky recipient of these Hall of Fame threads. After the show was over, the ladies' request to keep the jerseys as souvenirs was granted.
Red and navy felt scripts "Indians" across the chest, with number "21" similarly applied to reverse. The classic and controversial Chief Wahoo patch remains affixed at left sleeve. Interior collar holds embroidered "R. Lemon" felt swatch, while "1952" is embroidered directly into the jersey body below "Wilson [size] 42" labeling and a washing instructions tag. Game wear is evident, but the garment survives in outstanding condition, with nothing more than a few spots of possibly game-related staining to report. Letter of provenance from owner since 1953. LOA from Heritage Auctions.
