    Description

1952 Albert "Red" Schoendienst Game Worn Jersey. Ancient road grey flannel jersey comes to us directly from a former ballplayer with the St. Louis Cardinals' Sanford farm club of the Florida State League. As any serious vintage baseball uniform collector is well aware, it was standard practice for Major League clubs to donate their uniforms at the close of the season for minor league usage, and our consignor was fortunate enough to share a similar build to the Cards' Hall of Fame second baseman. While it's instantly apparent that the popular birds and bat logo has been stripped from the jersey chest and replaced with a block-lettered "Sanford" in three inch tall red felt, we can assure you that the red and navy number "2" (worn exclusively by Schoendienst from 1946 to 1955) applied to verso is original and unaltered. A "Rawlings St. Louis" label remains affixed at interior collar, as does the size "42" designator, and the "52" year identifier is properly embroidered into the jersey body at lower left front exterior tail.

We must also note that the standard Cardinals jerseys during this period had zipper fronts rather than the button-down style seen here, but this is not the first button-down from this period to have sold at auction, suggesting that there were rare instances of gamers that bucked the trend. The rather amateurishly hacked sleeves and staining at the midsection must also be addressed here. It's certainly far from a pristine specimen, but the collector on a budget will realize a rare opportunity to possess a Hall of Fame flannel, so there is a bright silver lining to the cloud of issues.
