    Description

1951-52 Battle Creek Belles (All-American Girls Professional Baseball League) Game Worn Uniform. Largely forgotten by baseball history in the decades following its 1954 dissolution, the All-American Girls Professional Baseball League enjoyed a great resurgence in interest with the 1992 blockbuster film "A League of Their Own" starring Tom Hanks, Madonna and Rosie O'Donnell. The movie launched a cottage industry of former player signings at various hobby shows, but actual game used material from the short-lived League has remained maddeningly elusive. Only the tiniest handful of the rather provocatively tailored uniforms have ever surfaced, and here we present the first we've had the fortune to encounter at Heritage.

This model was sported by a member of the Battle Creek Belles, which represented the small Michigan town for two years between the team's Racine and Muskegon residencies. The outline of an old stitching pattern where the "City of Battle Creek" patch is affixed on the chest suggests this uniform saw action in an earlier hometown, and the outline of a number "3" on the back where a number "1" now resides likewise speaks to a long term of service. The exceedingly rare League patch remains affixed at left sleeve. Original "King Sportswear Company" manufacturer's label remains in place at interior collar with the application of staples which surely date to years after use. The rare original canvas belt is likewise present. Considerable wear is evident, as to be expected for garments from this cash-poor experiment, but the aesthetics remain quite strong and certainly any deficiencies must be forgiven in light of the enormous rarity. LOA from Heritage Auctions.
