1950 Luis Olmo Game Worn Boston Braves Jersey from The Ken Aspromonte Collection. It's the most beautiful style in post-war baseball, and a style we instantly associate with legends from Warren Spahn to Hammerin' Hank Aaron, but this particular beauty belonged to one of the Major Leagues' first Puerto Rican stars, Luis Olmo. We aren't sure why Aspromonte owned the garment, as he came up with the Boston Red Sox in 1957 and was in their farm system since 1950. Aspromonte's sole season in a Braves uniform was 1962, when the team wore numbers on front and back, so his recollection that he wore this jersey is in error.

In any regard, we're pleased by the fine state of preservation with "Braves" felt script and tomahawk firmly affixed to chest despite some wear to the edges of the latter. Glorious Indian head sleeve patch on left sleeve rest below a second worn in the minors in 1952, suggesting the shirt saw subsequent play in the farm system of the Braves. Number "15" is boldly applied to verso. Lower left front tail holds "Wilson" manufacturer's label above "'50" year swatch. Marvelous condition, with light toning but all piping intact and no holes typical of antique flannel. A splendid representation. Letter of provenance from Ken Aspromonte. LOA from Heritage Auctions.

    The Ken Aspromonte Collection

Born in Brooklyn in 1931, Aspromonte made his Major League debut on September 2, 1957, just a few weeks before the Dodgers broke the hearts of his friends and family with their Ebbets Field exit. The skilled second baseman led a peripatetic professional career, representing six Big League franchises in as many years before crossing the Atlantic as one of the early American representatives of Japan's Nippon League. We find the souvenirs of that exciting career on the pages that follow, consigned to this auction by Mr. Aspromonte himself. Each lot will be accompanied by his personal signed letter of provenance.
