1948 Enos Slaughter Game Worn St. Louis Cardinals Jersey. The Hall of Fame outfielder earned a Cooperstown plaque for a career of brilliance, but he'll always be best remembered for his "Mad Dash" in the seventh game of the 1946 World Series to extend "The Curse of the Bambino" and secure a Cardinals World Championship at the expense of Ted Williams' Boston Red Sox. The offered garment finds "Country" still basking in the glow of that career-defining moment of glory just two years earlier, a 1948 season that once again saw Slaughter finish in the top ten for National League MVP balloting.The grey flannel jersey exhibits heavy wear from excursions to Ebbets Field, Wrigley Field and the Polo Grounds. A still-functional zipper bisects the classic birds and bat logo on the chest while the number "9," retired from the Cardinals wardrobe in Slaughter's honor in 1996, appears in red-on-navy felt on verso. Interior collar holds local "Rawlings" label at interior collar above a size "42" and "Dry Clean Only" label. Lower left front tail features "Slaughter 48" embroidered directly into the jersey body.
A speckling of moth damage affects the upper left chest to little distraction, and vintage team repairs at shoulder blades are even less obtrusive. This is still a top-quality Hall of Fame flannel, and just the second Cardinals model to tempt a bidding audience since the turn of the millennium. It is consigned by the daughter of the Cardinals farm team player who was issued the jersey as a hand-me-down from the Big League club, a recycling program that was common practice in the Majors for decades.
