1948-50 Joe McCarthy Game Worn Boston Red Sox Jersey, MEARS A7--Only Known Example! Only Connie Mack steered his teams to victory more often than the original owner of this singularly rare garment, a home white Red Sox flannel worn by Hall of Fame manager Joe McCarthy as he recorded some of the last of his 2,763 triumphs. Of course the bulk of those wins, and seven World Championships, came during Marse Joe's sixteen seasons of service to the New York Yankees, but McCarthy was highly effective at Fenway, posting a .607 winning percentage in 223 games of work during the Ted Williams era.

For collectors of Hall of Fame gamers, this offering represents the sole opportunity to clothe that empty mannequin in your trophy room, as no other McCarthy representation has ever surfaced in the hobby. It's a gorgeous specimen, bearing the long sleeves favored by the aging baseball mastermind, a restored "Red Sox" on the chest and a blank back, as McCarthy eschewed jersey numbers for the entirety of his managerial career. But the elegantly embroidered "Joe McCarthy" swatch at interior collar, just below the proper "Wilson [size] 44" tagging, confirms the historic attribution.

MEARS deducts three points for the aforementioned chest restoration, but otherwise finds not a single fault in this stylish garment. Strong game wear clearly relates to the jersey's secondary wear at the farm club level, but we find nothing that could be characterized as damage. A once-in-a-lifetime opportunity for the advanced collector. LOA from MEARS, A7. LOA from Heritage Auctions.
