Description
1946 Joe "Ducky" Medwick Game Worn Brooklyn Dodgers Jersey. The ten-time All-Star and 1968 Hall of Fame inductee is best recalled for his service to the celebrated 1934 St. Louis Cardinals World Championship squad, but Medwick called Ebbets Field home during four seasons of his illustrious career, split between two separate tours of duty. Here we find the ultimate relic of that second Brooklyn stand, a home white flannel jersey sported the season before Jackie Robinson would turn the eyes of the world toward Flatbush. Rather ironically, Brooklyn would find itself tied with St. Louis at a 96-58 record at the close of the 1946 season, necessitating the first playoff in National League history, claimed by the eventual World Champion Cardinals in a two-game sweep. The classic style will be familiar to even the casual fan, a simple blue felt "Dodgers" scripted across the chest, with number "16" boldly applied to verso. Interior collar holds "Spalding" label above size "44 Regular" and "Dry Clean Only" tags, underscored by an embroidered "J. Medwick" swatch. "Fat strap" grommet holes frame the sixth button from the top, giving way to an embroidered number "46" at lower left front tail indicating year of issue. Though zipper fronts were the norm for the '46 Bums, Medwick is documented as one of the few to opt for the classic button-down style instead, a fact confirmed by Getty image #50502085 as noted in accompanying MEARS paperwork. The MEARS experts characterize the wear as "moderate" and note only half-point reductions for a missing button and minor staining and a light tear in their assignment of an A9 grade for this Cooperstown-quality relic. A rare opportunity to own a genuine Brooklyn Dodgers Hall of Fame flannel from one of the most exciting stars of the 1930's and 1940's. LOA from MEARS, A9. LOA from Heritage Auctions.
