Description
1946 Joe DiMaggio Signed Uniform Player's Contract. "Joe DiMaggio was the greatest all-around player I ever saw," contemporary diamond legend Ted Williams once told reporters. "His career cannot be summed up in numbers and awards. It might sound corny, but he had a profound and lasting impact on the country." And Williams was right. Perhaps only Babe Ruth could match Joltin' Joe for pure notoriety, and certainly not since Ruth's retirement had a player garnered the sort of adulation that DiMaggio claimed both on and off the playing field. His marriage to Marilyn Monroe only brightened his star, and further solidified his status as one of the most recognizable figures of twentieth century America. As such, and artifact relating to the career of Joe DiMaggio carries tremendous collector interest and investment potential. This is particularly true of the piece offered here, the American League Uniform Player's Contract that secured DiMaggio's services for the 1946 New York Yankees. Returning from the military service that robbed Yankees fans of his bat and glove for three full seasons, DiMaggio picked up right where he left off, posting top ten figures in slugging, home runs, runs batted in and total bases.
The agreement stipulates a salary of $43,750 for DiMaggio's employment for the season, and is signed on the second page by "Joseph DiMaggio" and Yankees general manager Larry MacPhail. Two identical copies of the contract are included as well, though these are unsigned. DiMaggio famous quotation, "I'd like to thank the Good Lord for making me a Yankee" greets players in the corridor leading to the field before every game, and this is the very paperwork that made him a Yankee again after three years of war.
