1944 Pepper Martin Game Worn St. Louis Cardinals Jersey--Photo Matched to Final Season & Championship!

UPDATE: This lot now has a letter of provenance from the son of the original recipient.

His high-octane, all-out style of play, coupled with his aggressive baserunning skills earned him the moniker the "Wild Horse of the Osage." And his ability to ignite his team made him an indispensable component on the Gas House Gang's World Series championship teams of 1931 and 1934. A lifetime .298 batter, Martin notched four All-Star berths, three stolen base titles and scored over 120 runs three times.

Presented here is a coveted gamer Martin, conclusively photo matched to an undated image from his final Major League season as a player with St. Louis in 1944, when he came out of retirement to assist his old ball club whose roster had been depleted by Uncle Sam and World War II. That season, Martin appeared in forty games (and was in-uniform and on the bench for the Fall Classic) as the Cardinals and captured yet another World Series, putting a final exclamation point on a brilliant thirteen-season career.

Cream colored home flannel jersey sports "Cardinals," intertwined with the iconic redbirds on black bat logo, across the chest, all sewn-on in intricate red/black/blue/yellow chenille embroidery. Red braid accentuates the collar, shoulders, sleeve ends and three-quarter button-path [Note: The Cardinals wore zipper-front jerseys in the first half of the season and then switched to button-down after the All-Star Game]. Meanwhile, the patriotic Stars & Stripes patch, which was worn from 1943-45 to show solidarity for the war effort, is proudly displayed on the left sleeve. Tagging includes a "Rawlings" label and "46" size swatch in the collar, plus the all-important "Martin 44" in red chainlink embroidery in the front tail.

Please note that while Martin's number "10" was removed from the verso and replaced with "40" (all sewn-on in thick red on blue felt), when the jersey was relegated to minor league service, the outline of the original digits is clearly visible. Also, one of the front buttons has been replaced. Other than those two points, the jersey is completely original. Heavy wear, attributed to Martin, minor league use and storage, includes fabric discoloration, fraying to the braiding and scattered moth holes. Still, the jersey remains attractive and presents well. A rare gamer from a Cardinal great's final season and championship. Photo matching LOA from Davious Sports. Letter of provenance from son of recipient. LOA from Heritage Auctions.
