    Description

1943 Billy Johnson Game Worn New York Yankees Rookie Jersey.
The ghost of a removed number "7" which Mickey Mantle would later wear to immortality, and of a "Health" patch on the left sleeve, date this pinstriped gamer from third baseman Billy Johnson to his 1943 rookie campaign, as he'd wear #24 upon his return from the war, the sleeve patches retired from use. Our experts determine that the "NY" over the chest and number "37" on verso are likely franchise-instituted changes, probably at the minor league or spring training level. Interior collar holds proper "Wilson [size] 44" labeling above an embroidered "W. Johnson" swatch. A few small moth holes and small stains are of little distraction. Blue sharpie signature below the heart completes the package. LOA from Heritage Auctions.
