1943-45 Joe Cronin Game Worn Boston Red Sox Jersey. Home white flannel was sported at Fenway Park by the future Hall of Fame player, manager and executive during the war years, as the patriotic "Health" patch on the left sleeve attests. This later text-free version of the patch further narrows the potential range by a year. The jersey derives from the personal collection of Hank Severeid, who scouted for the Sox from 1944 until his passing in 1968 at age seventy-seven. The classic "Red Sox" font arches gently across the chest in red and navy felt, with a similarly constructed number "4" applied at verso. All identifiers are original and unaltered. Proper "Tim McAuliffe [size] 46" label appears at interior collar. The jersey exhibits heavy wear, with a team repair just before the "S" in "Sox" on the chest. Some foxing from improper storage is apparent, but the shirt still presents very well. The Sox formally retired Cronin's number "4" jersey in 1984, an honor long overdue considering his thirteen seasons of service as manager (eleven as player/manager). A superb Hall of Fame flannel from one of the most significant and influential figures in Boston Red Sox history. LOA from Heritage Auctions.

    The Hank Severeid Collection.

This is one of nine lots deriving from the personal collection of Henry "Hank" Severeid, whose baseball career began as a twenty-year old catcher for the 1911 Cincinnati Reds and ended only with his sudden passing while working as a scout for the 1968 Boston Red Sox. A member of the 1925 Senators and 1926 Yankees American League Championship teams, Severeid dedicated over half a century of his life to our National Pastime, and Heritage is pleased to present the following selection of artifacts from his journey. All lots are consigned directly by the Severeid family.
