Description

1942 Johnny Mize Game Worn New York Giants Jersey.

UPDATE: Final paperwork from SGC assigns a grade of E (Excellent) for this jersey, noting that the zipper at front is a modern replacement.

After six seasons of elite service to the St. Louis Cardinals to begin his Hall of Fame career, the Big Cat was dealt to the Giants in 1942 and immediately began to make an impact, leading the National League in RBI's (110) and slugging percentage (.521) to establish him as the most powerful slugger to wear the number "3" in the Big Apple since the Babe. This home white flannel is a gorgeous specimen from that auspicious first season in uptown Manhattan, with blue and red felt reporting "Giants" across the zippered chest and the aforementioned number "3" on verso. Left sleeve retains the rare and highly desirable "Health" patch in its single-season style (1943-45 replaced the word "Health" with red and white stripes). Interior collar maintains the patriotic color theme with its "Spalding" manufacturer's label and embroidered "J. Mize" swatch just below. The year, "42," is embroidered directly into center rear interior tail.

Solid game wear is evident, but the garment has dodged all of the condition flaws common to ancient flannel, as there are no stains, tears or moth damage to report, only the creamy vanilla toning consistent with eight decades of careful storage. We should note that the 1942 All-Star Game was hosted by the Polo Grounds and Mize batted clean-up for the Senior Circuit wearing this format, and quite possibly this exact jersey.
