    Description

1942 Johnny Mize Game Worn New York Giants Jersey.
The Giants set their sights on the Big Cat after learning that their starting first baseman Babe Young was getting the call from Uncle Sam, and while Mize himself would enter the military after the 1942 season, the Polo Grounds faithful greatly enjoyed that single season of service before his 1946 return. Mize would lead all National Leaguers with 110 runs batted in and a .521 slugging percentage in his first Big Apple campaign.

War-time jerseys are rare and highly coveted for their special sleeve patches, and the 1942 models had the best of them all, the only year the word "Health" appeared before transitioning to red and white stripes in replacement for 1943-45. It remains affixed here in its original and unaltered state, as do the blue-on-red felt "Giants" on the chest and number "3" on verso. We must report that the center zipper is a modern replacement, a common alteration as the vast majority of zippers from this jersey era have broken. The jersey appears to match Getty Image #173654445

A "Spalding" label appears at interior collar above a swatch embroidered "J. Mize," with the size "46" tag sewn into lower rear interior tail above an embroidered "42" year indicator sewn directly into the jersey body.

The garment presents beautifully, with the only faults (beyond the aforementioned replacement zipper) being minor detachment of the letter "G" in "Giants" and the "Mize" swatch, and a few scattered, inconsequential toning spots. An elite Hall of Fame flannel. LOA from Heritage Auctions.
