Rare flannel from The Mechanical Man!

1941 Charlie Gehringer Game Worn & Signed Detroit Tigers Jersey. "You wind him up Opening Day and forget him," once quipped teammate Doc Cramer, explaining how the Tigers' Hall of Fame second baseman earned the nickname "The Mechanical Man." Gehringer posted seven seasons with 200+ hits and led all American League second basemen in fielding percentage half a dozen times, all while twice completing 500+ consecutive game streaks. This history of reliability and brilliance would open the gates of Cooperstown for Gehringer in 1949.

It was the most famous Tiger of all who first saw Major League promise in this Michigan farmboy, as Gehringer recounted to an interviewer while discussing his 1923 tryout. "Ty Cobb was the manager then, and apparently he was so impressed he went up in his uniform to Mr. Navin, the club owner, and got him out of his office to take a look at me. I signed a contract with the Tigers, and I can't remember if I got a bonus. Maybe five hundred dollars. But I would have signed for nothing." The offered jersey finds the local boy made good in his eighteenth of nineteen seasons in Motor City, a road grey he wore while visiting Joe DiMaggio and Ted Williams during one of the American League's most memorable seasons.

A scripted "Detroit" spans the chest in midnight navy felt, with number "2," retired from Tigers service in 1983, similarly applied to verso. Interior collar bears proper "Wilson [size] 40" labeling above a blue sharpie signature from the superstar second sacker. Embroidered text at lower left front tail provides the "1941" vintage. The garment exhibits solid game wear and presents marvelously, with a scattering of light staining doing little to distract the eye. A marvelous example of a rare pre-war Hall of Fame flannel. LOA from Heritage Auctions. Full LOA from PSA/DNA.
