The National League's top ace claims the World Championship

1940 Bucky Walters Game Worn Cincinnati Reds Uniform. After claiming the National League's pitching Triple Crown in 1939, Walters nearly matched the feat the season he suited up in this home white flannel ensemble, topping all Senior Circuit hurlers with twenty-two (22) victories and a 2.48 earned run average, but placing only fifth with 115 strikeouts. However, Walters was happy to forgo that personal achievement for the most significant difference between the 1939 and 1940 seasons--a victorious World Series. After falling to the mighty Yanks during baseball's Centennial season, the Reds skinned the Detroit Tigers in seven games in 1940, half of the required victories supplied by Walters complete-game masterpieces.

Both of those World Series wins would occur at Cincinnati's Crosley Field, suggesting the very strong possibility that this uniform was on hand for that October domination of Greenberg, Gehringer and the rest of the Motor City crew. A beautiful tri-color felt logo patch adorns the heart of the jersey, giving way to a red and blue number "31" likewise constructed of felt, which has become detached from the jersey body in just an inch of the perimeter of each digit. "Walters" is embroidered directly into the collar above the "Spalding [size] 44" labeling, while a number "40" designates vintage at interior rear tail.

Matching pants find "Walters" embroidered at interior waistband, beside "Spalding [size] 38" and washing labels. Both uniform halves exhibit solid game wear with light staining throughout that does little to distract, as our catalog imagery should convey. Uniform is 100% original and unaltered. A truly special offering from the first World Championship season in Cincinnati since the one gifted by the 1919 Black Sox. LOA from Heritage Auctions.
