Description

1939 Bill Dickey Game Worn New York Yankees Pants. A seminal year in baseball history, 1939 heralded the game's centennial, the opening of the Hall of Fame, Lou Gehrig's retirement, and the Yankees' record fourth straight World Series crown.

Bill Dickey was the starting catcher on the Bronx Bombers' 1939 edition and, at age thirty-two, still displayed the batting and hitting talents which would one day serve to enshrine him in Cooperstown. Controlling the game from behind the plate throughout the championship season, Dickey was just as formidable at bat where he registered twenty-fours homers, 105 RBI and hit .302, one of eleven times he would surpass the gold standard for batsmen. During the World Series, he would slug two round-trippers and drive in five, as New York bested Cincy. For the season, Bill would be named an All-Star (one of eleven elections) and place sixth in the MVP balloting.

Here we present Dickey's pinstripe game worn pants from that historic 1939 campaign, with "W. Dickey" artfully stitched into the waist in vintage red chainlink. To the right of the name are sewn a "40" size size tag, a "Spalding" manufacturer's label, and a "Dry Clean Only" flap tag. Best of all may be the "39" sewn in red chainlink, which is neatly tucked away on the interior button-path. The original four-button fly is completely intact and the specimen exhibits nice wear, including four team repairs affected to the crotch area, back seat, and lower leg. The pants surely saw minor league use after the season as the "21" in vintage black laundry marker indicates. A wonderful Hall of Fame exemplar from a historic season in a golden age. LOA from Heritage Auctions.
