    Description

1938 Ray Berres Game Worn Pittsburgh Pirates Jersey. Exceedingly rare two-year uniform style was worn behind the plate by back-up catcher Berres during a tense pennant race that saw the Pirates lead the National League from July 12th through September 27th before being nipped at the wire by the Chicago Cubs. The jersey survives in simply phenomenal condition, exhibiting light game wear but none of the damage one typically encounters in pre-war uniforms. Patriotic red, white and blue felt spells a scripted "Pirates" across the chest, with Berres' number "32" applied in navy felt to verso. Navy single piping rings the collar, and double piping at the sleeve cuffs. Interior collar holds an embroidered "R Berres" sewn directly into the jersey body above a "Spalding" manufacturer's label with size "44" flap tag affixed. The "38" year designator is embroidered directly into the rear interior tail. A single missing button on the chest is the sole detractor. Unquestionably the finest surviving example of the style, and quite possibly the only one, period. LOA from Heritage Auctions.
