1938 Montreal Royals Game Worn Uniform. Ancient flannel jersey and pants derive from one of the most celebrated minor league franchises in baseball history, perhaps best remembered today as the last stop for Jackie Robinson before his ascension to the Majors. This example dates from almost a decade before Jackie's service to the squad, and was used by the veteran right-hander Horace "Hod" Lisenbee, who found himself back in the minors after seven seasons with the Senators, Red Sox and Athletics. The road grey jersey announces "Montreal" across the chest in gorgeously fonted red and blue felt, with matching trim running the length of the button path and collar and the sleeve cuffs. A midnight blue number "24" appears on verso, an odd color choice that may or may not be original to issue, though no evidence of a number change can be located. We find "Lisenbee" embroidered directly into the interior collar above a size "44" tag, and a "38" year designator likewise stitched directly into the body at the tail. Matching pants hold a bold stamped "24" at rear interior waistband, with a size "36" flap tag nearby. The uniform displays very nicely despite a degree of damage to lower right front tail, the letter "L" in the city identifier, and near the left hip of the pants. One must forgive these flaws in light of the tremendous scarcity of this full uniform, however. You'll be hard-pressed to find any other example. LOA from Lou Lampson.Auction Info
