    Description

1937 Wes Ferrell & Bobo Newsom Game Worn Boston Red Sox Jersey. A gift to our consignor from the widow of journeyman right-hander Newsom, this rare Red Sox style was utilized for just two seasons of American League travel. The jersey was saved for decades in the Newsom home, confirming attribution to the second half of the potential 1936-37 range, as Newsom inherited Wes Ferrell's number "12" when he and fellow Senator Ben Chapman were dealt to Boston in a trade that sent Wes and his Hall of Fame brother Rick to our nation's capital in June of 1937. A small number "37" is embroidered directly into the tail in red. It's "W. Farrell" we find embroidered in the collar of this heavy grey flannel rarity, just above a well worn "Spalding" logo label. A uniquely fonted "Boston" arcs gently across the chest in navy and red felt, with the number "12" applied to verso in navy alone. The jersey exhibits solid wear with some scattered small holes and staining, but our catalog imagery should indicate that the overall aesthetics remain strong. The first example we've encountered since a lesser player's representation garnered $7,170 in our April 2011 Signature Auction. LOA from Heritage Auctions.
