    Description

The earliest known gamer of this Hall of Fame legend!

1937 Luke Appling Game Worn Chicago White Sox Jersey. He was coming off the greatest season of his Hall of Fame career when he suited up in this home white flannel as reigning American League batting champion, a 1936 campaign in which he drove in 124 runs and posted a White Sox-record twenty-seven-game hitting streak. So there's no doubt that the sight of this number "4" jersey was always welcome to fans at Chicago's Comiskey Park.

It's a lovely, time-tested style, the navy blue "Sox" over the heart effectively unchanged since the days of Shoeless Joe's Fall Classic treachery, with blue piping running the contours of the collar, button path and cuffs. The number "4," the very first digit retired by the White Sox franchise, appears in navy blue felt on verso. "Appling" is embroidered in faded red thread at interior collar above a "Spalding" manufacturer's label, while the vintage is denoted by an embroidered "37" at interior center rear tail.

A handwritten surname and removed sleeve patch is indicative of secondary farm club wear, and we report some tearing at the armpits, four replaced buttons and wear to the piping in the interest of full disclosure. A team repair is evident at right shoulder. All of these issues are well within the norm for eight-decades-old flannel and, again, cause only minimal visual distraction. For a player who earned the nickname "Old Aches and Pains" for his continuous griping about minor ailments, such trivial faults to his old jersey seem only appropriate. LOA from Heritage Auctions.

The hammer price for my Mantle card significantly exceeded my admittedly conservative estimations, and I couldn't be more pleased.
