Hall of Fame flannel from a Big Apple legend

1936 Casey Stengel Game Worn Brooklyn Dodgers Uniform. Rare and beautiful style was worn at Ebbets Field by one of the greatest figures in New York City baseball history, a man who represented all four Big Apple ballclubs to distinction during his half century of Major League service. This heavy flannel pinstriped ensemble dates to the last season of a three-year stint at the helm of the Brooklyn Dodgers, a period of calm before the storm that would find the Bums a perennial frontrunner beginning in the early 1940's.

The jersey announces "Brooklyn" across the chest in an elegant font executed in two-tone felt, while two rows of navy piping add heft to the design at button path, collar and cuffs. Navy felt number "36" on verso is a period team replacement, as the ever-generous Stengel surrendered his original number "31" to rookie outfielder Eddie Wilson when he debuted midseason. Interior collar is embroidered "C Stengel 31" beside the "Spalding" manufacturer's label, while lower rear exterior tail announces the vintage with a chain-stitched "36." Matching pants provide the identical tagging and embroidery at interior waistband. Some wear at the piping must be reported, but does little to distract.

Both halves of the ensemble are remarkably well-preserved, avoiding the perils of staining and moth damage common to wool garments of such advanced age. Team repairs on verso suggest secondary farm club action, as was common practice for decades in the Majors. Certainly its one of the finest pre-war Dodgers uniforms we've encountered, recalling the earliest years of a managerial career that would earn the Ol' Perfesser a Cooperstown plaque.
