Description
Our first gamer from Little Poison!
1933-34 Lloyd Waner Game Worn Pittsburgh Pirates Jersey, MEARS
A8.5 & SGC Excellent. The size of his talent belied his
diminutive physical stature, as this younger brother of the Hall of
Fame fraternal duo soared north of the .300 mark in ten different
seasons as a leading offensive force for the Pittsburgh Pirates.
Despite eighteen seasons of Major League service between 1927 and
1945, this is the very first jersey we've ever had the privilege to
offer to our Heritage clientele. The road grey flannel features a time-tested design utilized during Pirates excursions from 1933 through 1937, but the team chain-stitched the year into the jersey bodies of their uniforms beginning in 1935, so we can place this specimen into the earliest two years of the span due to the absence of such embroidery. "Pirates" arcs gently across the chest in red-on-black felt Old English lettering, with the same materials forming the number "10" on verso. Interior collar holds "Spalding" square label and "L. Waner" embroidered directly into the body. Game wear is assessed as moderate to heavy.
Turning to a consideration of condition, the eye is first drawn to a triangular area cut away from center front tail, although this alteration is characterized as "vintage" in the MEARS report, and it seems entirely possible that this was Waner's own work in order to reduce bunching when tucked into his pants. The soutache at collar and cuffs is frayed, a very common fault of ancient jerseys bearing this design feature. Small holes appear at left sleeve and center button placket, but these are minor distractions. A larger (1") tear on the right sleeve could be sutured if desired.
This is a heavy, substantial garment that must have been brutal to wear in the dog days of summer, and nearly a century later it presents very well despite its scattered condition faults, due in large part to its sturdy construction. For those collectors focused upon Hall of Fame flannels, this may very well be the only opportunity at ownership, so we expect a very competitive battle on Platinum Night. LOA from MEARS, A8.5. LOA from SGC, Excellent.
