The first McGraw uniform to appear at auction since 1993!

1932 John McGraw Game Worn New York Giants Uniform, MEARS A9. He debuted as an eighteen-year old rookie with the 1891 Baltimore Orioles, and skippered his final game for the 1932 New York Giants, closing out his Hall of Fame career with 2,763 managerial victories, second only to the great Connie Mack. But despite more than four decades of service to Major League Baseball, known examples of McGraw gamers could be counted on Mordecai Brown's pitching hand. This gorgeous ensemble is the first opportunity since the early 1990's to compete at auction for one of those exceedingly rare representations.

The single-season home pinstriped style allows us to definitely assign vintage to McGraw's abridged final year in baseball, seventeen games of service before his failing health forced him to resign on June 3, 1932. His last game had been two days earlier, a loss to the Phillies at the Polo Grounds, a strong suggestion that this was the very last uniform ever worn by the legendary manager.

While there is no physical documentation of the fact, the uniform's owner informs us that the garments track back originally to the McGraw family, lending further credence to the theory that it's the one Mugsy took home after his last contest. The marvelous condition is to be expected considering such a short term of duty, and today just a hint of dye bleeding and a few scattered small moth holes mark any diversion from its appearance during those final days of an enormously significant Hall of Fame career.

"Giants" spans the chest in the team's distinctive black and orange font. There is no number on back--the team debuted jersey numbers on June 23, 1932, a few weeks after McGraw's departure. Red and blue piping runs the perimeter of the collar, button path and cuffs. "J.J. McGraw" is embroidered at interior collar beside a proper "Spalding" manufacturer's label. Matching pants are identically embroidered and tagged at interior waistband. The uniform is 100% original and unaltered.

This uniform has been submitted for evaluation by MEARS, but the examination has not been completed at the time our auction catalog goes to print. We ask that all interested parties visit our online listing, which will be updated as soon as it becomes available. LOA from Heritage Auctions. LOA from MEARS, A9.
