Possibly worn to save Babe Ruth's "Called Shot" game!
1932-33 Herb Pennock Game Worn New York Yankees Uniform--Photo
Matched! Wherever this Hall of Fame southpaw went, success
followed. He rookied with the 1912 Philadelphia Athletics,
participating in pennant captures in 1913 and 1914 (a World
Championship in the former) before being traded to the Boston Red
Sox in 1915 to win another pair of World Series (he'd miss a third
due to WWI military service in 1918). The Sox would deal him to the
Yankees in--you guessed it--1923, where he'd participate in his
first of four World Championship seasons in New York.The offered ensemble finds The Knight of Kennett Square near the end of his Bronx service, the number "12" affixed to the back of the provided road grey jersey supplying the date range of our lot title--Pennock also wore number "11" and "16" for the Yankees in earlier seasons. We should note that Pennock's greatest day in this uniform format was a three-up, three-down ninth inning save of 1932 World Series Game Three at Chicago's Wrigley Field, a contest best remembered for Babe Ruth's fabled "Called Shot." If photography clear enough to provide for a definitive match to that game were located, the value of this jersey would be amplified tremendously by the association. Resolution does provide a wonderful photo match from September 1932, placing the garment on Pennock's back just a few weeks before that immortal Fall Classic.
The jersey exhibits marvelous, sweaty game wear and some unique customizations, notably added button holes at lower front and back of tail to accept a crotch strap that would keep the jersey tucked, and still more button holes at each sleeve cuff, presumably for (not included) sleeve lengtheners. Otherwise, the format is pure, timeless Yankees--a deep navy felt "New York" in block lettering on the chest, and number "12" similarly applied to verso. Interior collar holds a gorgeous red embroidered "Pennock H" beside the proper "Spalding" manufacturer's label. The sun collar has been trimmed down, a common customization back in the day as the feature irritated the necks of some players. An unrepaired inch-long tear appears just below the right shoulder and a missing top button cause little distraction.
The matching pants exhibit very heavy wear, though the "H. Pennock" and "Spalding" label at interior waistband shine though perfectly. A large repair appears at left thigh, and the bottoms of each leg have been shortened. All original buttons remain at the fly. This is the first game worn Pennock offering of any format that Heritage has been privileged to present to the collecting marketplace. LOA from Resolution Photomatching. LOA from Heritage Auctions.
