    Description

1930's Lou Gehrig Game Worn New York Yankees Pants, MEARS Authentic. Update: Please note these pants will be accompanied with a MEARS Authentic LOA.

Though we prefer to remember the brave and noble Henry Louis Gehrig by his more dignified "Iron Horse" nickname, the contents of this lot can't help but remind us of his other, playful moniker, "Biscuit Pants." As the story goes, it was not only Gehrig's heart which was the biggest in the game but also his backside, which was housed for a season (or perhaps more) in the presented road grey flannel pants.

Any collector worth his salt will need no lesson in the scarcity of Gehrig game worn uniform pieces, even less common than those of his legendary hard-slugging brethren Babe Ruth. The desirability of Gehrig garments is illustrated in the hard data of a $167,300 auction result for another pair of pants that Heritage offered in February 2015.

This Gehrig specimen exhibits very strong wear from the Hall of Fame first baseman, with several sizeable team repairs on the back to repair damage likely inflicted by sliding. A small unrepaired tear by the left rear pocket is of little concern, as is another at the right knee. All four original buttons remain at the fly. Most importantly we find the original "L. Gehrig" embroidered in red thread directly into the rear interior waistband of the pants, placed beside the proper "Spalding" period manufacturer's label.

The opportunity to participate in the curatorship of an important Lou Gehrig artifact is not one to be taken lightly, and few could outshine a uniform piece from his fabled Yankees service. With any quality jersey realizing prices in excess of a quarter million dollars in the rare instances they are made available for sale, the presented pants should be all the more attractive to the savvy investor. LOA from MEARS, Authentic. LOA from Heritage Auctions.
