    Description

World Championship vintage and one of the greatest/rarest sleeve patches in baseball history!

1925 Cliff Knox Game Worn Pittsburgh Pirates Jersey with Babe Adams Pants, MEARS A9. You probably don't know the man, but you know the team. The 1925 Pittsburgh Pirates stand tall in baseball history as the second edition in franchise history to claim the World Championship, denying Walter Johnson and his American League Champion Washington Senators a defense of their 1924 title. The achievement established the 1925 Pirates as the first major North American sports team to overcome a three-games-to-one series deficit.

While Knox appears in an early team photo from that season, his full Major League resume consists of six games at catcher with the 1924 roster. Period newspapers have him signing a 1925 contract in February and visiting a doctor for a shoulder injury in March before being released to Birmingham of the Southern Association in late April. It's unclear if the jersey was passed on to another member of the team upon Knox' departure--it was sourced with a matching pair of pants from Babe Adams, which would suggest that it was, although neither garment exhibits much game wear.

We consider the spectacular condition of this road grey ensemble to be a welcome miracle, particularly the glorious "National League Golden Jubilee" patch on the jersey's left sleeve that is a true Holy Grail among patch collectors, and the first ever worn by an entire league. We should note that both this patch and the logo "P" on the right sleeve are original and unaltered, assuring this is not a 1924 jersey repurposed for 1925 (as the Pirates wore the "P" on the left sleeve in 1924). Interior collar holds proper "Spalding" manufacturer's label and the remnants of a second label underneath, likely a blank swatch for a handwritten identifier that went unused due to the embroidered "Knox" at lower right rear tail. The point lost in the MEARS evaluation is due to two missing buttons. No deduction is made for minor fraying of the soutache that runs the perimeters of the collar, button path and sleeve cuffs. An original photograph (9x6.5") of Knox wearing what almost certainly is this very jersey is included in the lot.

The matching pants bear the same "Spalding" patch and embroidered identifier (Adams) at interior waistband, likewise with a blank secondary tag below. The clasp at front has become partially detached and, like the jersey, a degree of general age-toning is apparent, but we must again marvel at the garment for its remarkable state of preservation.

Veteran collectors are well aware that Major League uniforms of such advanced vintage are extraordinarily rare, and this one will hold immense appeal to those with Steeltown affections, though we suspect that those competing for ownership will range well beyond that geographical affiliation. A truly exciting opportunity for the advanced uniform collector. LOA from MEARS, A9. Letter of Opinion from Sports Investors Authentication. LOA from Heritage Auctions.
