    Description

1924 Whitey Witt Game Worn New York Yankees Team Sweater with Witt Letter. We can happily live without the racial segregation, the spitball and daytime-only games, but we'll always lament the extinction of the baseball sweater, lost to the inexorable advancement of baseball culture and technology. In the pre-war era, these heavy wool garments were standard for Major League Baseball, and you'll find a few glorious examples in our Permanent Auction Archives, including a 1912 Red Sox model worn by Harry Hooper ($89,625) and another Red Sox representation of unknown player attribution ($21,000) from the same period as the offered Yankees example.

This one was worn by outfielder and lead-off hitter Whitey Witt, who represented the Yankees between 1922 and 1925. But the unique style of this garment has been definitively matched to photographs from the 1924 season, and specifically to the Opening Day ceremonies that saw the team receive gold pocket watches to commemorate the first World Championship in franchise history. Heritage regulars will recall our famous sale of Babe Ruth's pocket watch from that occasion, which commanded $717,000 in February 2014.

The "NY" logo over the heart is, to the best of our research, the only example of its kind in the full history of the team's wardrobe, a clear departure from the time-tested format that first debuted on uniform sleeves in 1909 and remains in vogue to this day. Interior collar is tagged, "Bradley Knit Wear Major League. The sweater survives in spectacular condition, with only a few small yarn pulls, but none of the staining or moth damage common in contemporary wool garments.

No player attribution appears within the garment itself, but a copy of a letter from Mr. Witt himself, signed in 1988, serves as the proof of ownership. A truly extraordinary--and likely the only surviving--memento of the day the Yankees finally earned their World Championship prize. Copy of letter of provenance from Whitey Witt. LOA from Heritage Auctions.

The hammer price for my Mantle card significantly exceeded my admittedly conservative estimations, and I couldn't be more pleased.
