    Description

Ex-Paul Hill Collection, acquired with Huntzinger's Tour sweater, also on offer in this auction

1924 Walter Huntzinger Game Worn New York Giants World Tour Full Uniform.
It's one of the rarest uniforms in the entirety of the baseball collecting hobby, a format worn only by the fourteen or fifteen globetrotting Giants who joined the Chicago White Sox to preach the gospel of our national pastime in foreign lands in 1924. The home white pinstriped aesthetic is nearly identical to that which the team wore during their National League Championship regular season, with the team logo "NY" at left sleeve, but is enhanced by a glorious chenille American flag patch over the heart.

The jersey is crafted from heavy flannel and survives the passage of nearly a century with remarkable durability, lacking the staining and moth holes typical of most pre-war uniforms. Interior collar holds a period "Spalding" label and a red embroidered "Extra 42" in the place where a player's name is typically placed.

We know, however, that this jersey belonged to pitcher Walter Huntzinger, as it was acquired by famed collector Paul Hill from the Huntzinger family along with his Tour sweater and an unrelated 1927 certificate bearing his name--both appear in another lot within this auction. Joining the jersey are the equally well-preserved matching pants, bearing the same "Spalding" label and red embroidery at interior waistband, reading, "Extra 36." Even the patriotic heavy wool stirrups are here, showing dye bleed from sweaty wear. Included is a Type 1 original photograph of the Giants at the Polo Grounds (Huntzinger is at far right), signed to Hill by Huntzinger, establishing their relationship.

We are aware of just two other 1924 Tour uniforms having sold at auction. The first--Muddy Ruel's White Sox home white gamer--commanded nearly $45,000 over a decade ago right here at Heritage. The second, Frank Frisch's Giants roadster, realized $80,000 six year ago. LOA from Heritage Auctions.
