Description

1923-28 Eastern Colored League Game Worn Sweater--Rare Negro League Garment! The Eastern Colored League was at the center of the golden age of Negro League Baseball during the Roaring Twenties when players like Cool Papa Bell, Oscar Charleston, Pops Lloyd, Turkey Stearns, Mule Suttles, Willie Wells, and Satchel Paige were forging their legends. During its five-year run, from 1923-1927, the league squared off against the Negro National League four times, from 1924-27, capturing the series in 1925 when Hilldale (Darby Daisies) defeated the Kansas City Monarchs.

The heavy, black wool sweater featured here sports a vertical and overlapping "ECL" in bright, gold felt sewn down the left front. Also on the front appear two tidy waist pockets where a player might have kept his best tin of chewing tobacco. Inside the left pocket is sewn a rectangular felt patch where a player's name and/or number most likely appeared. While some markings are definitely still visible, they are not clearly decipherable. Completely visible and intact is the tag in the collar, which reads: "M&H, The Sign of Quality, Sportsmen's Outfitters, Fishing Tackle Experts, 430 Market St., Philadelphia." This tag suggests that the jacket may have belonged to a member of one of the league's Pennsylvania-based teams, namely Hilldale, Harrisburg Giants or Homestead Grays. LOA from Heritage Auctions.
