    Description

1921 Frank Woodward Washington Senators Game Worn Uniform. President Warren G. Harding was just settling into his new home at the White House a few miles from Griffith Park, home ballfield of the Washington Senators, when this uniform was issued at the start of the 1921 American League season. It stands as one of the few surviving examples from the Walter Johnson era in our nation's capital, and its former owner shared space on that pitching staff which also included Tom Zachary, the man who would surrender Babe Ruth's sixtieth home run of 1927. The heavy wool grey pinstriped jersey exhibits heavy use, with light staining around the collar. A Washington "W" patch is present on each sleeve, the only identifiers beyond the "Woodward" chain stitched into the body of the shirt at interior collar, and the simple "Spalding" logo applied just below.

Matching pants are attributed to "Shanks" at interior waistband, that being Howie "Hawk" Shanks, the speedy third baseman who would lead the American League in triples in 1921. "Spalding" logo is found at interior waistband as well. Pants likewise exhibit heavy wear, with team repairs and blue staining at the knees.

A matching uniform cap is included, with embroidered letter "W" on the crown. There is no apparent player attribution or manufacturer's tagging at the interior leather headband, but the cap was sourced with the featured jersey and pants and is clearly therefore Woodward's. A tear along the rear seam of the cap has been taped shut, though this will not be visible upon display.

Included is a vintage 3x5" snapshot of three players wearing this uniform style, though we're uncertain which (if any) is Woodward. MEARS has provided a letter of examination for the jersey only, which it grades A9.5, with a half point deduction for the collar staining. LOA from MEARS. LOA from Lou Lampson.
