Description

One of the finest Dead Ball Era representations in the hobby!

1909 Glenn Liebhardt Game Worn Cleveland Naps Jersey, MEARS A7. Thrilling and exceedingly rare road grey pinstriped flannel is the first we've ever encountered from the age when Hall of Fame legend Napoleon Lajoie held the reins of the team that would come to be known as the Cleveland Indians. This particular model once belonged to right-handed relief pitcher Liebhardt, who recorded a respectable 2.92 earned run average during this, his final season in the Major Leagues. We're able to peg the vintage definitively to the 1909 season as it was the only year utilizing pinstriped grey without a contrast collar.

Neatly embroidered in green at interior collar is "G. Liebhardt," and the same color felt is utilized to spell "Cleveland" in unique block lettered font across the chest. We must note that this felt lettering is the result of a careful, professional restoration, which is common for the very thin supply of Dead Ball Era jerseys to have surfaced in the modern hobby. Otherwise the garment survives in spectacular condition, without any of the staining or moth holes endemic to century-old wool. It's arguably the best-preserved Major League uniform piece of this vintage in the modern hobby.

The 1909 Naps were a team heavily laden with early legends, from the team's namesake to a forty-two year old Cy Young to the tragic Addie Joss, who would perish suddenly in 1911. Each once owned and wore a garment identical to the presented model. A simply magnificent relic for the advanced and uncompromising uniform collector. LOA from MEARS, A7. LOA from Heritage Auctions.
