1954 World Series Game One Willie Mays Makes "The Catch" Ticket Stub, PSA VG 3. On September 29, 1954, Cleveland Indian Vic Wertz crushed a Don Liddle pitch 420 feet deep in Game 1 of the World Series. With the score tied up 2-2 against the New York Giants in the eighth inning, all fans turned and watched as Willie Mays made an over-the-shoulder catch at the warning track, running full speed. The play held Larry Doby at third base and preserved the score at 2-2.
