The Mick makes Fall Classic history

1952-64 Mickey Mantle World Series Home Runs Ticket Stubs Complete Run. Cy Young's 512 victories. Nolan Ryan's 5,714 strikeouts. Sam Crawford's 309 triples. There are a few records in Major League Baseball that may be safer than the Mick's tally of World Series long balls, but not many. Admittedly the path to the pennant is far more treacherous than it had been during Mantle's time, when the regular season decided the pennant among only eight teams per league, but opportunity is only part of the equation. Despite an injury-plagued career that saw Mantle significantly hobbled almost every year as the leaves started to change colors, the Hall of Fame outfielder was most dangerous on the game's biggest stage. His 536 career regular season home runs came in 8,102 at bats, an average of 15.1 to one. In the World Series, his 230 at-bats produced eighteen long balls, factoring at 12.7 to one.

Here we present a full run of ticket stubs to the sixteen games that saw Mantle stamp his name in the Fall Classic record books, each carefully selected for visual strength. Each stub is housed in a PSA capsule for protection and unquestioned authenticity. The accounting:

    1) 1952 Game Six, VG 3. 2) 1952 Game Seven, Good 2. 3) 1953 Game Two, VG-EX 4. 4) 1953 Game Five, EX 5. 5) 1955 Game Three, EX-MT 6. 6) 1956 Game One, VG-EX 4. 7) 1956 Game Four, EX 5. 8) 1956 Game Five, VG-EX 4. 9) 1957 Game Three, NM 7. 10) 1958 Game Two, NM 7. 11) 1960 Game Two, VG 3. 12) 1960 Game Three, EX 5. 13) 1963 Game Four, EX-MT 6. 14) 1964 Game Three, EX 5. 15) 1964 Game Six, EX 5. 16) 1964 Game Seven, EX-MT 6.

"There is no sound in baseball akin to the sound of Mantle hitting a home run," wrote Arnold Hano in Baseball Stars of 1958, "the crunchy sound of an axe biting into a tree, yet magnified a hundred times in the vast, cavernous, echo making hollows of a ball field." Here, for the cost of a single winning bid, is the opportunity to celebrate the most noteworthy of them all, the realization of a hobby task that becomes more difficult with each passing year as the few surviving stubs settle into permanent collections.
