The Brooklyn Dodgers save the soul of our National Pastime

1947 Ebbets Field Opening Day Ticket Stub--Debut of Jackie Robinson. On Jackie Robinson's tombstone in Brooklyn's Cypress Hills Cemetery, just five miles from where Ebbets Field once stood, these words are engraved: "A life is not important except in the impact it has on other lives." By that metric, no athlete in American sporting history is more important than the man who took the dangerous first step across baseball's shameful color line. Though Ruth and Cobb may stand taller in the sport's pantheon, from a purely sociological standpoint Robinson has no challenger in significance, and it's no stretch to say that Reverend Martin Luther King, Jr. and President Barack Obama would have been impossible without the event this ticket commemorates.

This is just the second example that Heritage has had the honor of presenting, the first commanding more than $11,000 over five years ago. This example rode in the shirt pocket of a fan in Ebbets Field's left field stands that historic day, April 15, 1947. Though Robinson would go hitless in his Big League debut, he reached base on a seventh inning fielding error and was doubled home by Pete Reiser to score what would prove to be the game-winning run against Johnny Sain and his Boston Braves.

The stub, bearing bold red text announcing "Opening Day 1947" and a black ink facsimile signature of essential Hall of Fame executive Branch Rickey, exhibits typical handling wear and a hint of paper loss at lower edge, likely the result of scrapbook removal. There are no issues of any significant distraction, and the stub is sealed for protection and unquestioned authenticity within a "PSA Authentic" slab. The sport of baseball takes a huge step toward equality for all--what could be more American than that? Encapsulated "Authentic" by PSA.
