Baseball saves its own soul...
1947 Brooklyn Dodgers Debut of Jackie Robinson Ticket Stub, PSA
Fair 1.5. The most important sports ticket of the post-war era?
It would be virtually impossible to argue otherwise. Though various
newspapers in the New York area spent most of their coverage of the
Brooklyn Dodgers' 1947 home opener praising the heroics of center
fielder Pete Reiser, who either drove in or personally scored every
run recorded by the Bums in their 5-3 victory over the visiting
Boston Braves, the game will forever be remembered as our national
pastime's finest hour, the righting of a longstanding historical
wrong. On April 15, 1947, Jackie Robinson took his first brave step across Major League Baseball's color line, beginning a long and dangerous march toward equality beneath a deluge of shouted slurs and death threats delivered by post, telephone and telegram. Robinson would go hitless in this first of 1,382 regular season appearances, but would continue on to produce exactly the type of season required to validate his legitimacy to the doubters, finishing fifth in National League MVP voting and first in balloting for Rookie of the Year.
Those with a finger to the pulse of the hobby marketplace have found important tickets surging in popularity and value over the past few years, an analog to the trading cards and magazines which are having their own bull market spurred on in large degree by the regimented approach to census-taking that such collectibles allow. When consulting the population report of PSA for this stub, we find only eleven entries in total, five of which are assessed at "Authentic." This is one of two at the listed grade, finding its level due primarily to a tear that spans three quarters of the upper edge, with only four superior. This example is just a half-point lower than the stub we sold for $480,000 back in 2022. Encapsulated by PSA, Fair 1.5.
