A beloved baseball tradition is born!
1933 All-Star Game Full Ticket, PSA Authentic--Population Four! It was the brainchild of Arch Ward, sports editor for the Chicago Tribune, who saw opportunity for an unprecedented showcase of Big League superstars to tempt the legions of tourists visiting the 1933 World's Fair. The contest was intended to be a one-time event, a "Game of the Century" orchestrated for two noble causes--to financially benefit a charity supporting needed and disabled retired players, and to cheer a nation suffering in the grip of the Great Depression.Fifty-five newspapers nationwide printed ballots to elect the rosters for the two teams, and by all standards the electorate performed admirably, choosing twenty future members of the Baseball Hall of Fame. Six more future inductees undertook roles as managers, coaches and umpires.
An estimated 49,000 came through the Comiskey Park turnstiles on July 6, 1933 to watch Babe Ruth launch what would prove to be the game-winning home run in a four-to-two American League victory. Ruth would also rob Chick Hafey of an eighth inning home run to preserve the lead. Lefty Grove would then retire the National League in order in the ninth to seal the victory.
The near-capacity crowd left few tickets unsold, but here we find a member of that thin population, the first example we have ever encountered, and only the fourth to find a home in a PSA slab. Obverse presents beautifully, with no significant visual distraction, while the verso shows the signs of removal from a scrapbook, the key to its survival to present day. For collectors hoping to build an unbroken Midsummer Classic run, this may very well be the only opportunity to clear the most challenging obstacle en route to completion. Bid accordingly.
