Baseball (2) Original 1919 Chicago Tribune World Series Black Sox Newspapers EX/MT UnCertified. Two original sports pages from the Chicago Daily Tribune during the infamous 1919 World Series, which later became known as the "Black Sox Scandal." The first is a cover page only from Thursday, October 2, 1919 and details the first game of the Series, in which Chicago White Sox ace hurler Eddie Cicotte was driven from the mound in the fourth inning. One story's headline reads, "Cicotte 'Wrong,' Ruining Chance of Sox to Win," and goes on to detail the willingness of Cincinnati fans to bet on the balance of the Series. Pictured are Cincinnati players Morris Rath, Jake Daubert, "Greasy" Neale, and "Dutch" Ruether. The second is a full sports section from Saturday, October 4, 1919 and details the third game of the Series, in which the Sox win for the first time in the Series. One story's headline reads "White Sox Find Fighting Spirit; Changed Outfit," and goes on to state "Fighting spirit was what the White Sox lacked in the two games of the world's series played at Cincinnati and the thing Boss Gleason demanded of them for the third game played here yesterday." Pictured are Chicago players Dick Kerr and "Chick" Gandil. The two newspapers offer a fascinating glimpse into one of baseball's most significant historical events.
