Description

1972 Roberto Clemente 3,000th Hit Program & Ticket Stub. Assuming we can trust the fan's notation at the fully scored center page of this historic program, just 13,117 fans were on hand to witness the great Roberto Clemente's entrance into the illustrious 3,000 Hit Club as he lined a double to left center in the fourth inning of the final game of the Pirates' regular season. Nobody watching could have possibly known that this was also to be the final regular season game of the tragic Hall of Famer's life, as he would perish in an airplane accident just three months later. The fan was, however, clearly well aware of the importance of what he'd witnessed, as a lengthy description of the proceedings joins the scoring of the September 30, 1972 contest with the New York Mets at interior center and on the program cover. Likewise at center is a stapled stub for this poorly attended milestone event, identical but for the staple holes to a specimen which realized $4,183 in a Heritage May 2005 auction. The program remains in solid VG-EX condition, and the stub is NRMT but for the stapling. Also here is a rare twenty-page memorial publication issued just after Clemente's passing, VG-EX.
