Description

1923 Hartford Senators Program Featuring Lou Gehrig. Extraordinarily rare program is the first we've ever seen boasting the great Lou Gehrig's minor league membership. And "boasting" is the right word, as the opening page boldly proclaims, "Columbia Lou Gehrig, Hartford's Home Run King." The unscored eight-page program lists Gehrig batting clean-up and fielding first base. Interestingly, fellow future Hall of Famer Chief Bender is listed as a pitcher for the visiting Baltimore team, his finest days behind him rather than ahead. The same could be said of the program itself, which is quite ragged and partially held together with tape, including the rear cover which features a team image including the nineteen-year old Iron Horse and manager Paddy O'Connor, from whose estate this piece derives. Included is a 1928 Hartford "Booster's Club" membership card issued to O'Connor's wife and picturing both Paddy himself and Gehrig, now a star Yankee. We must report that Gehrig's signature at the bottom is a stamp. The card is G-VG.

The Paddy O'Connor Collection.

This is one of sixteen lots deriving from the personal collection of Paddy O'Connor, a native of County Kerry, Ireland who quickly discovered an aptitude for our National Pastime upon his immigration to the States. O'Connor's baseball career included brief terms in the American, National and Federal Leagues, and most notably membership with the World Championship 1909 Pittsburgh Pirates. The material offered here is consigned directly by the O'Connor family.
