Description
1909-70 First and Last Games at Shibe Park Programs Lot. From the opening of Connie Mack's state-of-the-art baseball palace on April 12, 1909 to the retirement of a beautiful but woefully outdated relic on October 1, 1970, this lot has the history of Philadelphia's most storied stadium covered. Most important, of course, is the spectacularly rare program issued for the grand opening of the Park, a piece which once found a home in the famous Barry Halper collection and was sold in the historic 1999 auction. Flip open the colorful cover and you'll find the announcement, "Souvenir Opening of Shibe Park, Monday, April Twelfth, 1909, Athletics vs. Boston." The fifty-page program is densely packed with articles, photos of Athletics players past and present and marvelous period advertising. The cover exhibits only moderate wear, with some splitting at the spine but all pages and cover still firmly attached, a very respectable VG. Bookending the collection is a program and ticket stub for the Phillies' last home game of 1970, each VG, and two certificates issued at the park that day making note of this important milestone. Finally, the lot includes a slat from a Shibe Park seat back, EX, with a handwritten notation stating it was removed on October 1, 1970 by a fan attending the final game.Auction Info
