Description
1908 World Series Program (Detroit). Perhaps even more scarce than the Chicago 1908 Series program which precedes this lot is the presented Detroit version, once owned by a disappointed fan of the great Ty Cobb who watched his club get blanked by Mordecai "Three Finger" Brown in a suffocating four-hit performance at Bennett Park. Our comprehensive database of major auction results notes just a single example of the 1908 Detroit program having sold since the famous 1999 Barry Halper sale, making this just the second presented in the twenty-first century. And what an absolute beauty it is! Comprised of an orange construction paper cover and a four-page inner spread featuring team photos and the center scorecard, this rare treasure is about as delicate and flimsy as they come, explaining why they rate among the rarest programs on earth. The scorecard is unused except for a few notations regarding changes from the printed rosters. The cover is likewise marked in pencil with the date. Close inspection reveals that the inner spread is loose from the lower staple, but this is not immediately apparent upon first glance. Otherwise there are no stains, tears or creasing, making this extraordinary publication an absolute miracle of survival. A thrilling discovery for the advanced and uncompromising collector.
