1915 Schmelzer's Sporting Goods "Shoeless Joe" Jackson Advertising Pin. As the term of his banishment approaches a looming centennial, "Shoeless Joe" Jackson occupies a baseball purgatory, beloved and forgiven by nearly all but those who could free him from his excommunication. But if a coat of tarnish remains on Jackson's name, the same cannot be said of this remarkable survivor, a gorgeous promotional item effectively unchanged from the year of its birth when Shoeless Joe was nothing other than the greatest hitter in baseball.

Whitehead & Hoag produced the celluloid eight-pin set from which this pristine relic derives, a company well-known to baseball hobbyists for its role in creating some of the earliest World Series press pins. Jackson is arguably the key to the issue, but with such an extraordinarily limited population, there's scarcely enough data to crunch. Cobb, Mathewson and Maranville also appear within the issue, the balance absent from Cooperstown for reasons of merit rather than punishment.
Whitehead & Hoag's name joins that of Schmelzer's Sporting Goods on the perfect paper insert on verso, the latter a Kansas City retail outlet who must have released only a small handful of these commemoratives, as only about twenty-five are known to exist today.

Obverse is free of the slightest cause for complaint, measuring 1.25" in diameter.

The hammer price for my Mantle card significantly exceeded my admittedly conservative estimations, and I couldn't be more pleased.
