Mel Allen (1913- 1996) was the long-time voice of the New York Yankees, and also famous to millions for his work on This Week in Baseball. An incredibly versatile announcer, who was one of the first sportscasters selected for inclusion in a special wing at the Baseball Hall of Fame, Allen also broadcast numerous Rose Bowls, Orange Bowls, and even two Super Bowls. His unique voice, heard in accompaniment to Don Larsen's 1956 World Series perfect game, is a priceless facet of sports history.. The award was obtained directly from the estate of the late broadcasting legend. This Hall of Fame Plaque is an extremely attractive piece, and it represents the pinnacle of achievement in a universally appreciated discipline. Also included is an 8" x 10" photo from Babe Ruth's final appearance at Yankee Stadium when he was introduced by Allen. It was raining that day and someone put a camel's hair coat over his shoulders. One by one to booming cheers his old teammates were introduced. Finally, announcer Mel Allen called him to home plate. Shuddered out of the topcoat and using a bat as a cane, Ruth walked out slowly to home plate. The ovation was thunderous.
"Thank you very much ladies and gentlemen," the Babe struggled to talk into the microphones. "You know how bad my voice sounds. Well, it feels just as bad. You know this baseball game of ours comes up from the youth. That means the boys. And after you've been a boy, and grow up to know how to play ball, then you come to the boys you see representing themselves today in our national pastime." The Hall of Famer has signed the 8" x 10" photo in bold blue sharpie. LOA from PSA/DNA.
