Late 1880's New York Giants Team Cabinet Photograph. We begin this copy with an acknowledgment that we have been unable to locate another example of this image, and with no markings that would assist in identification, our lot title is the result of the imperfect science of facial comparison. We'll let the bidders be the judge.

Our strong suspicion is that the man seated at farthest left in the image is the legendary Buck Ewing, and that the dark-suited man is the manager and co-founder of the New York Giants Jim Mutrie. The man seated to Ewing's left in the second row, one of the scant few lacking the prominent mustaches of the day, appears to be Hall of Fame ace Mickey Welch. We assess the man seated to Mutrie's right as Hall of Fame shortstop John M. Ward. The man standing at center strongly resembles Tim Keefe. Note that all players are wearing are wearing the uniform style that Keefe sports in his 1887 Kalamazoo Bats card. At six-foot three, 220 pounds, Roger Connor is likely the man at Keefe's right shoulder. He likewise wears this uniform style in his "Yum Yum Tobacco" trading card appearance.

We've been able to find very little about the photographer "Wm. B. Fariss," whose copyright is stamped at lower right of this 4.25x6.5" cabinet, but an image of the "Chicago National League Base Ball Team, 1885-86" does appear in the Library of Congress online archives. The cabinet photo exhibits general handling wear, with rounding of corners of the thin-bordered mount, but no issues of signficant aesthetic distraction.
