Description
An exceedingly rare signed photo from the newlywed DiMaggios' honeymoon voyage
Circa 1954 Joe DiMaggio & Marilyn Monroe Dual-Signed
Photograph. A quick visit to the Permanent Auction Archives of
our website supplies some history to this rare and desirable relic,
as a similar dual-signed image commanded $89,625 in our October
2006 Signature Auction. That photograph was consigned on the heels
of the tremendous press generated by a $191,2000 sale price for a
baseball signed by the iconic celebrity couple, a result which then
stood as the world record for an autographed ball. A gentleman in
Japan contacted us shortly thereafter to report that a member of
his family had served as sports editor for a Tokyo newspaper, and
had acquired the aforementioned signed image during the DiMaggios'
honeymoon trip to the Orient.Joe and Marilyn wear the same clothing in this newly discovered image of the pair stepping off an elevator, leaving no doubt but that this shot was snapped the very same day. Both the Yankee Clipper and his gorgeous new bride have autographed the 4x6" photo, the ink rating a technical 8/10 to 9/10, but competing somewhat for contrast against the dark clothing worn by the stylish pair. Minor edge and corner wear causes no distraction, all such concerns remaining well clear of the central focus and the autographs themselves.
It is well known within hobby circles that DiMaggio flatly refused to sign any piece related to his former wife Marilyn in the years following her death. While his marriage to this timeless icon of Hollywood glamor was short and painful, she remained very close to his heart even after her untimely passing, which Joe was convinced was orchestrated by the Kennedy family. "They murdered the one person I loved," DiMaggio confided in his friend and attorney Morris Engelberg, as recounted in Engelberg's biography of the Yankee legend. This reluctance to share his love with the world was a major factor in the failure of the marriage, and likewise in the scarcity of any pieces bearing the autographs of both. Following the collectibles formula that states that desirability times scarcity equals value, one can certainly understand why world records fall when fueled by this All-American pair.
